By Merle D. Strege

Whether you're leading a small group, preparing an expository sermon, or reading the Bible in your own devotional time, you're likely to need help in understanding the Word of God. Even the best Bible student wants to know more about…

        • the culture and customs of Bible times
        • secular history that influenced Bible events
        • how Bible books were written and edited
        • the meaning of key Hebrew and Greek words
        • how various Christian groups teach Bible doctrines

You will find this information and more in this reference book by Dr. Merle D. Strege, of Anderson University. Bible Backgrounds contains Dr. Strege's reference material
published in the Bridges curriculum over a nine-year period. Drawing upon the latest discoveries of Bible archeologists, linguists, and theologians, Dr. Strege has compiled an effective tool for in-depth Bible study.

Arthur M. Kelly, coordinator of Christian education and congregational life for Church of God Ministries, Inc., says of this book: “For many years, Dr. Strege has provided guidance, direction, insight, context, and information to help teachers and learners better understand Scripture. Bible Backgrounds contains that work and makes it accessible for wider use. …[This book will] assist the Holy Spirit in the holy work of forming Christ in God's people.” —Preface

Elementary-age children go camping (indoors or out) and learn how to use the resources God has given them. Based on the Israelites' journey through the wilderness, this 5- session study teaches children to be good stewards of daily decisions, natural resources, time, money, and personal skills.

This economical book includes pages that you can reproduce to teach games and crafts for the course. It can be used for Sunday school, midweek study, VBS, or other children's ministries.

Tina Houser serves as the minister of children at First Church of God in Kokomo, Indiana. She is also the author of More Than Cookies and Punch (Warner Press, 2006) and Beakers, Bubbles and the Bible (Warner Press, 2008).

This group study for children looks at five character traits of the Christian life using some of the sports from the Summer Olympic games to present those qualities.

GOD'S OLYMPICS has been created for use in an informal teaching and learning time. Activities designed for multiple ages of children use learning centers for crafts, games, and snacks, while worship is crafted as a total group experience.
